03.02.2007 Orion
Integrated Biosciences Inc announced the operations of its Agricultural
Division in Peru. Fourteen agronomists will provide value added
services in the areas of crop science, plant breeding and integrated
pest management for Peruvian farmers producing high value crops.
These activities coupled with the research-and-development (R&D)
efforts on new elite germplasm, genomics research, and the commercialization
of new generation of agrochemicals seek to increase farm income,
and promote more opportunities for sustainable farming. Orion's
CEO Willy Valdivia-Granda pointed "we are delighted to provide
new services and operate in Peru. As this country's economy continues
to growth, we believe our commitment to this area mark a new activity
to increase our revenues and provide services totaling for more
than one million USD every year to this emerging market". Currently
Orion Integrated Biosciences Inc. is distributing products of the
BAYER Crop Science Division and the same time as part of its corporate
responsibility, Orion Integrated Biosciences Inc. has began its
effort to plant more than 250,000 trees in the next three years.
03.08.2007 Orion
Integrated Biosciences announced today the intent of the U.S. Defense
Threat Reduction Agency to award a US$2.4 million grant to a consortium
which includes the United States Army Medical Research Institute
of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) and Orion Integrated Biosciences
Inc. The project will use Orion's genomic signature technology to
develop a new generation of small molecule inhibitors against biological
warfare agents.
02.27.2007 CHI's THE BIOTECH PHARMA PARTNERHIP. San Francisco, California
01.19.2007 GORDON CONFERENCE ON CHEMICAL & BIOLOGICAL
TERRORISM DEFENSE. Ventura, California
01.04.2007PACIFIC SYMPOSIUM ON BIOCOMPUTING. Maui, Hawaii. Orion Integrated
Biosciences Inc. introduced in the article "Transcriptional
Interactions During Smallpox Infection and Identification of Early
Infection Biomarkers" a new algorithm for the identification
of smallpox infection biomarkers. Variola major (smallpox) is a
deadly disease that can be intentionally reintroduced into the human
population as a bioweapon. As the article pointed, while host gene
expression microarray profiling can be used to detect infection,
the analysis of this information using classical data analysis techniques
can produce contradictory results. Orion Integrated Biosciences
Inc. researchers developed a novel computational analysis pipeline
that incorporates molecular genome annotation features that are
key for identifying early infection biomarkers (EIB). Using microarray
data, Orion's research team identified 58 EIBs expressed in peripheral
blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) collected from 21 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) infected with two variola strains via
aerosol and intravenous exposure. The level of expression of these
EIBs was correlated with disease progression and severity. This
approach was also used to discover receptors that might be used
by the virus to complete replication, assembly, and maturation.
Orion Integrated Biosciences Inc. technique is currently used by
different clients and collaborators to discover both infection biomarkers
for bacterial and viral diseases as well to evaluate the efficacy
of vaccines.
12.30.2006 ORION
FEATURED IN FORBES/WOLFE NANOTECH REPORT. According with
the magazine, Orion Integrated Biosciences Inc. technologies touch
(literally) on hot button issues for nanotech: healthcare and pathogen
detection. The article pointed that while more than 20 companies
claim to be able to recognize different pathogens, none so far have
been able to convert this ability into a commercial, mass-manufacturable
device. As Orion's CEO Willy
Valdivia-Granda pointed, the trouble isn't for lack of sensitive
detection technologies but rather it's that few detection systems
offer the means to quickly store, retrieve and exchange molecular
and diagnostic data. Orion Integrated Biosciences is trying to remedy
this situation by combining nanoscale probes with a proprietary
genomic database of deadly viral pathogens. The article also discussed
the US$8 Million investment that Orion Integrated Biosciences is
pursuing to complete mass scale production of cheaper and broad
spectrum detection devices for biodefense and sexually transmitted
diseases.
11.09.2006 9th
ANNUAL BIODETECTION TECHNOLOGIES. San
Diego, CA. Orion
Integrated Biosciences Inc. presented the progress in the detection
of viral pathogens using genomic barcoding technology.
11.13.2007 SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE ON CHEMICAL & BIOLOGICAL DEFENSE RESEARCH. Hunt
Valley, Maryland. Orion Integrated Biosciences researcher presented
a new generation of passive and active technologies and algorithms
for pathogen detection, identification, mapping and modeling. Two
presentations in this important conference disscussed Orion Integrated
Biosciences's technology to confirm individual exposure to chemical
and biological hazards before symptoms develop.
10.03.2006 The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases
(USAMRIID) and Orion Integrated Biosciences Inc. have entered into
a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement to use of Orion's
encephalic and hemorrhagic viruses genomic signatures and barcodes
for developing new pathogen detection technologies.
